Level 3 Child Development Diploma

The course includes the following features: stages of pregnancy and birth; early years of development; the development of self; the social world of the child; emotional development; adolescence; problems arising from development; the family; the social construction of childhood; physical development; theoretical approaches to the development of childhood; the psychological approach (including the main psychological theorists; including Freud, Piaget, Darwin, Vygotsky); processes of accommodation, assimilation and equilibrium; the influences of peers; making friends and social networks.
Entry Requirements
All students must be 16 years of age and above to enrol on our Level 3 Child Development Diploma course.
Level 3 Diploma courses require a minimum prior learning to GCSE standard in order that students can manage their studies and the assumed knowledge within course content.

Unit 1 Defining childhood

Unit 2 Pregnancy and the sociology of the family
In this unit, we delve into family structures and the broader social environment encompassing the child. Students will acquire insights into the effects of welcoming a new baby on interpersonal relationships. The focus is on evolving family dynamics, and the narrative touches upon aspects like religion, family income, and industrialisation.
Unit 3 The developing baby
This unit provides a comprehensive overview of fetal development, spanning from conception to birth. It delves into matters related to the post-birth period and addresses essential practical considerations during the preparation stages for the baby’s arrival.
Unit 4 Theoretical approaches to the study of childhood
In this unit, attention is directed towards the theories of Charles Darwin, Jean Piaget, and Lev Vygotsky. These theories will be thoroughly examined, along with an evaluation of their practical implications for the contemporary understanding of child development and effective child-rearing practices.
Unit 5 Emotional development
This unit will explore the importance of children’s emotional development, presenting the works of Sigmund Freud and John Bowlby. The theories of these two scholars will be examined in the context of contemporary parenting and daycare, discussing their implications for present-day practices.
